Director / Head of Research / Research Officers at the WMU-Sasakawa Global Ocean Institute (Ocean Institute)

The World Maritime University (WMU) is established by the International Maritime Organization. WMU’s mission is to be the world centre of excellence in postgraduate maritime and ocean education, professional training and research, while building global capacity and promoting sustainable development. With the University’s new strategic directions, specifically expansion of its mandate to include ocean-related matters, and strengthening ocean research, WMU is well positioned for this collaborative partnership with the Nippon Foundation.

The WMU-Sasakawa Global Ocean Institute (Ocean Institute) has been established within the framework of the WMU. It is to be a world-leading center of excellence for ocean research, dialogue, capacity building and policy support in meeting ocean obligations, addressing existing and emerging challenges, and seizing the opportunities inherent in contemporary ocean governance and the 2015 sustainable development commitments.


Main purpose

The WMU is seeking a person with an international reputation for academic excellence in ocean governance combined with strong leadership skills, who will complement the existing strengths of the University and enable it to develop new areas of research excellence.

The Director will report to the President of the WMU. He/She will provide leadership and foster excellence in ocean research, dialogue, capacity building and policy support in meeting ocean obligations, addressing existing and emerging challenges, and advancing the opportunities inherent in contemporary ocean governance and the 2015 sustainable development commitments. The Director will interact with regulators, scientists, governments, international organizations, industry, policy makers and civil society to generate objective and constructive communication on difficult ocean issues. In this capacity, he/she will be the primary representative of the University in strategic relationships with other research providers, government agencies, industry in the area of ocean governance and research.

Main purpose

The Head of Research will report to the Director of the Ocean Institute. He/She will work with the Director to foster excellence in ocean research, dialogue, capacity building and policy support in meeting ocean obligations, addressing existing and emerging challenges, and advancing the opportunities inherent in contemporary ocean governance and the 2015 UN Sustainable Development commitments. The Head of Research will work with a multidisciplinary team of research staff to deliver on the mandate of the Institute

Duties, responsibilities

The Head of Research will provide support and advice to the Director in developing, designing, planning and implementing the research policies and programme for the Ocean Institute, including long-term strategies.

The successful candidate will support the development of an extensive international network of collaborators on a range of ocean-related issues with capacity for high impact, integrated research activity both within and across groups in academic and/or industry settings.

The Research Officer will work under the supervision of the Head, Research. He/she will foster excellence in ocean research, dialogue, capacity building and policy support in meeting ocean obligations, addressing existing and emerging challenges, and seizing the opportunities inherent in contemporary ocean governance and the 2015 sustainable development commitments. The Research Officer will undertake research assigned by the Director or Head of Research.

Duties, responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate capacity for high impact, integrated research activity both within and across groups in academic and/or industry settings. The candidate must have a research profile of an internationally competitive calibre, as evidenced by publications in leading journals in the field, presentations at significant conferences, accolades for creative professional/research work, and strong endorsements by referees.

At WMU, the candidate should expect to:

  • Undertake and contribute to research in the field of ocean governance and ocean policy;
  • Participate in developing the research agenda;
  • Contribute to innovative statistical and mathematical models to better assess drivers and indicators relevant to the ocean research agenda;
  • Carry out projects as a full member of a research team;

The candidate must have a research profile as evidenced by publications in leading journals in the field, presentations at significant conferences on research findings and strong endorsements by referees.
