The Department of Chemistry at the University of Turku (UTU) in Finland welcomes Doctoral Researcher or Project Researcher applications in the group of Prof. Jovana V. Milić.

The position is related to the beginning ERC Starting Grant project “Smart hybrid materials for opto(electro)ionics” (SmartHyMat) from the 1st of  September 2024 to 31st of  August 2029 led by Professor Jovana V. Milić. The fixed-term position is from on January 1, 2025 until December 31, 2028, with a possible extension.The start of employment is expected by January 2025, and it can be advanced or postponed upon mutual agreement.

 

Job description

The doctoral project will include the development of stimuli-responsive hybrid organic-inorganic materials for smart and sustainable energy technologies. This will involve molecular design as well as synthetic and solid-state material chemistry methodologies, which will be complemented with the analysis of structure and optoelectronic properties. The project will predominantly involve synthesis and analysis of organic compounds and hybrid materials.

 


Who we are looking for

The applicant should meet the following expectations:

  • MSc (or equivalent) in Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related field, preferably with a focus on Organic/Supramolecular Chemistry, Organic Electronics, and/or Photovoltaics, or will graduate soon.*
  • Experience in organic synthesis and characterization of organic compounds.
  • Additional experience in supramolecular and solid-state chemistry is an advantage
  • Excellent communication skills in English (written and oral).
  • Commitment to scientific integrity and willingness to work in a collaborative setting

*The qualification requirements of the position state in the University of Turku’s Rules of Procedure.  In the case the selected candidate does not yet have the right to study for a doctoral degree at the University of Turku, the title of Project Researcher will  used at first, and the study right for a doctoral degree should be applied for in the next possible call (Spring/Autumn 2025): University of Turku Graduate School (UTUGS) and Doctoral Programs. If a selected candidate is close to their graduation (MSc degree), the job title will be a Research Assistant at the beginning of the employment and a candidate will apply for the study right for a doctoral degree in the next possible call (Spring/Autumn 2025) after graduation.

Salary and trial Period

Salary will be determined in a contract. Salary will be determined through University of Turku system for research and teaching personnel, and for a doctoral researcher / project researcher will be in levels 2-4 and an additional a performance-based salary component of up to 50 % will be paid. The salary will in the beginning of the employment be approximately 2 400 –2 700 € / month. For a research assistant it will be in level 1 and additional a performance-based salary component of up to 50 % will be paid. The salary will be approximately 2 140 –2 300 euros/month in the beginning of the employment.

A six-month trial period applies to the position.
