The University of Helsinki, founded in 1640, is one of the best multidisciplinary research universities in the world. The University has four doctoral schools, which offer a total of 32 doctoral programmes (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/research/doctoral-education/doctoral-schools-...). Our doctoral candidates, supervised by top-class researchers, carry out their research as part of an international academic community. The University awards some 500 doctoral degrees annually.

The aim of the Doctoral Programme in School, Education, Society and Culture (SEDUCE) (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/research/doctoral-education/doctoral-schools-...) is to provide PhD candidates with an in-depth knowledge on research-based teaching and learning. The programme is multidisciplinary including graduates from early education to adult education. Doctoral programme also includes home economics, craft studies, special education, and subject-specific research on didactics. The focus areas of research conducted at the programme are Education, society and culture and Learning and interaction (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/faculty-of-educational-sciences/research/rese...).

The Doctoral Programme in School, Education, Society and Culture (SEDUCE) invites applications for

for a 1–4 year period starting from 1 January 2018. The duration of the employment contract depends on the phase of the appointee´s thesis. Doctoral candidate positions are primarily filled as four years’ contracts.

The duties of a doctoral candidate are to work on their doctoral thesis and to complete the doctoral studies determined by the doctoral programme’s curriculum. The duties may also include teaching and other tasks for up to 5 % of the annual working time.

The appointee must obtain the right to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/research/doctoral-education/the-application-p...) by the start of the appointment. Other requirements include a research proposal of a high standard and the ability and motivation, as demonstrated through previous degree studies or otherwise, to pursue the doctoral degree according to the research proposal and the accompanying study plan.

The salary for the doctoral candidate position is based on levels 2–4 of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee shall be paid a salary component based on personal work performance. Depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience, the salary is EUR 2065–3022 per month. The appointment starts with a probationary period of four months.
