Let’s shape the future - University of Antwerp

The University of Antwerp is a dynamic, forward-thinking, European university. We offer an innovative academic education to more than 20 000 students, conduct pioneering scientific research and play an important service-providing role in society. We are one of the largest, most international and most innovative employers in the region. With more than 6000 employees from 100 different countries, we are helping to build tomorrow's world every day. Through top scientific research, we push back boundaries and set a course for the future – a future that you can help to shape.

The Departments of Physics and Chemistry in the Faculty of Science are looking for a full-time (100%) postdoctoral scholarship holder in the field of physics or chemistry - electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR).

Position

  • You will conduct research in the framework of a multi-disciplinary project OPTRIBITS: “Optically Addressable Trityl-Radical-based Molecular Qubits” which is funded by the ERA-NET “Quantera” initiative. The project is a collaboration with two other research institutes in Europe (ICMAB – CSIC, Spain and the University of Stuttgart, Germany) and focuses on trityl-based molecular qubits and their hybrids with single-wall carbon nanotubes. Your role within the project is the synthesis of these hybrids and their advanced spectroscopic analysis with a combination of magnetic resonance and optical spectroscopy, mainly focusing on different continuous-wave and pulsed electron paramagnetic resonance techniques, including also optically-detected magnetic resonance. You will be working at the shared EPR facility (https://www.uantwerpen.be/en/research-groups/nanoropt/research/equipment/) in the NANOrOPT and TSM2 research groups under the guidance of Prof. Sofie Cambré (https://www.uantwerpen.be/en/staff/sofie-cambre/) and Prof. Sabine Van Doorslaer (https://www.uantwerpen.be/en/staff/sabine-vandoorslaer/ )
  • You will publish scientific papers related to the research project.
  • You will interact with the other researchers in the project and the international collaborators and assist in the supervision of PhD students in the project.
  • You will participate in the provision of academic services: you will represent the research group both internally and externally, help to coordinate service projects, and so on.

Profile

  • You hold a PhD in the field of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Physics (or you will have obtained it by the time you start work).
  • You have a solid background in spectroscopic methods; a specific background in (pulsed) electron paramagnetic resonance and/or optically-detected magnetic resonance is a strong advantage
  • You have a good basic knowledge in materials sciences; knowledge on carbon nanotubes or molecular quantum bits is also an advantage
  • You enjoy working in a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies.
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision.
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
  • You can speak and write fluently in English.
  • You have not worked for longer than 3 years in Belgium

What we offer

  • We offer a full-time appointment as a postdoctoral scholarship holder for a period of 2 years; possibly extended with 1 additional year.
  • The planned start date is July 1, 2024 or as soon as possible after that date.
  • Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts for postdoctoral scholarship holders on the pay scales for Contract Research Staff (Dutch: Bijzonder Academisch Personeel, BAP).
  • You will do most of your work at Campus Drie Eiken in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
