In aerobic environments life has adapted to reactive oxygen species (ROS) and to reactive nitrogen species (RNS) in various ways, e.g., (i) by developing effective systems to destroy ROS/RNS when they reach harmful levels, (ii) by using ROS/RNS as signal messengers and regulatory effectors, (iii) by using ROS/RNS in immune defence.

PhD Positions in the Research Training Group (RTG 1947) “BiOx”

The Research Training Group ”Biochemical, biophysical and biomedical effects of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species on biological membranes” (RTG 1947) funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) welcomes applications for up to

12 PhD positions

(part-time 65%, pay scheme TV-L 13)

for a three-year structured program (initially 18 months fixed-term positions). Start of the program will be October 1, 2017 and the end on September 30, 2020, subject to the availability of budget funds for further 18 months. Payment will be made according to pay group 13 TV-L Wissenschaft if the personal and pay group specific qualifications can be provided.

The RTG is based at the University of Greifswald, in cooperation with the University Medicine Greifswald. One PhD project is partially located at Hannover Medical School.

The scientific goal of this RTG is to undertake interdisciplinary and interfaculty based studies of the biochemical, -physical and -medical effects of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, in biochemical and cellular systems, in order to understand the importance of the interplay between biochemical, biophysical and (patho-)physiological factors, and to discover new interactions of ROS/RNS with biological membranes.

The RTG is organized in three intimately linked focus areas with multiple methodological overlap:

  1. Production and membrane-targeting of ROS/RNS.
  2. Chemical and physico-chemical effects of ROS/RNS on membranes.
  3. (Patho-)physiological consequences of ROS/RNS modified membranes.


  • overall above-average University degree (master or equivalent) in one of the above disciplines such as life sciences, chemistry, physics or related fields
  • advanced English language skills (written & spoken)

What we offer

A teaching program accompanies the interdisciplinary research strategy. It covers the different disciplines, both by lectures and by practical classes. In addition, workshops allow the participants to interact and network. Each PhD project has two supervisors from different disciplines. What we expect

Beyond the passion for and experience in research, we expect the active participation in the RTG and the readiness to take the extra step of an interdisciplinary approach towards a PhD. The participation in the teaching program is mandatory.

Application process

  • One motivation letter, which states your interests and why you want to become part of the RTG, which project you choose and why you think you would fit into this project.
  • One curriculum vitae,
  • your degree certificates (including Abitur, or equivalent),
  • an abstract (maximum 3 pages) of your diploma or master thesis,
  • two letters of recommendation.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to Greifswald in August 2017 to an applicant’s day. On that day applicants will present themselves to the RTG but also get the opportunity to meet the principle investigators of the projects they have applied for.
