Postdoc position: Modelling validation of linear plasma devices and tokamak divertors

Research
Magnum-PSI is the only device that can currently study plasma-wall interactions under plasma and neutral conditions matching those expected in the ITER divertor. This is not only important for testing divertor materials, but also for understanding and reliably extrapolating to the basic plasma processes in future fusion devices such as ITER. However, due to the fundamentally different magnetic configurations, plasma conditions in reactor divertors cannot be derived from Magnum-PSI experiments alone. This demands validated modelling of both Magnum-PSI and tokamak divertors with similar tools. The B2.5-EUNOMIA code suite existing of the B2.5 edge plasma code and the EUNOMIA neutral particle Monte Carlo code has been developed meeting the specific demands of the modelling of linear devices like MAGNUM-PSI. This project aims to provide a code to code bench mark in divertor geometry of the B2.5-EUNOMIA code suite against existing code suites for the modelling of tokamak divertor plasmas like SOLPS-ITER. In addition the extension of the B2.5-EUNOMIA suite to inclined targets in linear plasma devices will be pursued.

Job description
Scientific aim
This position is part of the strategic programme 'Taming the Flame', which aims to enhance our understanding of the physics of power exhaust of tokamak fusion reactors and to develop advanced control strategies for high-performance, low wall load operation.
Responsibilities and tasks
- to implement the necessary adaptations in the EUNOMIA code to allow the modelling in tokamak divertor geometry;
- to bench mark B2.5-EUNOMIA and SOLPS-ITER (or another code suite) against each other in tokamak and linear geometry;
- to implement inclined target geometry in the linear device simulation of B2.5-EUNOMIA.

Location
DIFFER (Dutch Institute for Fundamental Energy Research) is one of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) institutes and focuses on a multidisciplinary approach of the energy research combining physics, chemistry, engineering and materials science. The institute is based on two main strands, solar fuels for the conversion and storage of renewable energy and fusion-energy as clean and unlimited source of energy. DIFFER is developing and supporting a national network on fundamental energy research and is closely collaborating with academic institutions, research institutes and industry.

Requirements
We seek enthusiastic and highly talented candidates that are willing to work in an international and interdisciplinary team of theoretical and experimental physicists. The applicant should have a PhD in plasma physics or computational sciences and experience in plasma edge modelling preferably with one of the leading tokamak SOL and divertor modelling code suites. The candidate must hold a PhD degree in Physics, with a strong emphasis on computational science, physics theory and modelling.
The successful candidate should have good programming skills. Good verbal and written communication skills (in English) are mandatory.
NWO-I prefers candidates who have qualifying experience (e.g. as PhD student or postdoctoral researcher) in a scientific research institute abroad.

Conditions of employment
You will be employed by NWO-I for a fixed period of two years.
Your salary will be up to a maximum of 4,089 euro gross per month, depending on your level of experience. The salary is supplemented with a holiday allowance of 8 percent and an end-of-year bonus of 8.33 percent.
