DESCRIPTION-GSMI 

Geology and Sustainable Mining Institute (GSMI) is based on a new strategic vision of research and training, based on the integration of the different components of the mining life cycle (geology, extraction, mineral processing, sustainable mining, mining environment and CSR). In addition to conventional mineral resources (phosphates, metals, etc.), the institute will also develop new topics such as mining economics, water management in the mine, decarbonization of the mining cycle, CSR, etc.

Job Description

The Geology and Sustainable Mining Institute (GSMI) of Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) invites applications for a full-time researcher position in soil rehabilitation. The recruited will be an integral part of a multidisciplinary team comprising experts in soil science, water management, soil microbiology, mine reclamation, and the economic analysis of various solutions.

He will be responsible for initiating and conducting applied research in different areas:

  • Soil science 

  • Mine & agricultural soils reclamation.

  • Soil chemistry

  • Soil physics

  • Soil fertility management

  • Soil conservation techniques

  • Soil remediation technologies

  • Circular economy and waste valorization

  • Environmental impact assessment

  • Sustainable land management practices

The ideal candidate for this position should possess the following qualifications:

  • A PhD in geosciences with a focus on environmental issues.

  • Postdoctoral research experience in areas related to soil reclamation and mine rehabilitation.

  • Capacity to innovate and develop novel formulations of amendments to reclaim soil.

  • Demonstration of working with circular economy principles and waste valorization.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in conducting field-based experiments in mining and/or agricultural environments.

Additionally, the candidate should have:

  • Expertise in various analytical tools, including soil and water chemistry, physics, and isotopic analysis. Moreover, experience in working with GIS (Geographic Information System) tools would be a significant asset

  • Strong expertise in soil mineralogy, including SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) and XRD (X-Ray Diffraction) 

  • A proven track record of publishing research articles in reputable peer-reviewed journals and presenting at conferences.

  • Experience collaborating in research environments and a willingness to work within a multidisciplinary team.

  • Strong communication skills in both English and French.

The expected start date is September 1st, 2024. The appointment will be at the professor level depending on the CV and experience of the successful candidate.
