3 doctoral students in Combustion Engines to Competence Center CCGEx

KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm has grown to become one of Europe’s leading technical and engineering universities, as well as a key centre of intellectual talent and innovation. We are Sweden’s largest technical research and learning institution and home to students, researchers and faculty from around the world. Our research and education covers a wide area including natural sciences and all branches of engineering, as well as in architecture, industrial management, urban planning, history and philosophy.

Department of Machine Design is active in research and education within product realization. Specific areas are: Machine elements, Machine Design, Mechatronics and Embedded control systems, Internal Combustion Engines, Integrated product development,Innovation and Industrial Design.

Job description

This project will be run within the Gas Exchange Competence Center (CCGEx). CCGEx focuses on research on gas exchange in modern combustion engines. The overall goal is to make engines more efficient and environmentally friendly, thus increasing fuel efficiency without losing performance, reducing emissions of hazardous substances and managing noise and damping in the engine's gas exchange system. This in part through hybridization and electrification of components.

The research within CCGEx combines expertise in flow dynamics, acoustics, thermodynamics, turbocharging and combustion engine technology. Both basic and applied research efforts are carried out and combine experimental studies with CFD. Development of new methods and analysis tools belongs to the Center's strengths. CCGEx is a collaboration between the Mechanical Engineering and Vehicle Engineering departments at KTH, the Energy Agency and industrial partners, ie Scania, Volvo and Borg Warner. At KTH, CCGEx officially began January 1, 2011 and it is now entering its third period. The center has a key role in Sweden to train expert engineers and researchers who create the future of sustainable propulsion technology. For more information see: www.ccgex.kth.se.

CCGEx is currently seeking candidates for three doctoral positions in Combustion Engine Technology, focusing on simulation and experiments applied to gas-exchange processes and turbocharging in sustainable propulsion systems.

The aim of the research is to investigate the system characteristics of the three-dimensional, turbulent, non-isothermal and pulsating flow that occurs in the complex pipes and valves that control the flow in and out of motors and its impact on engine performance as well as systems and components such as turbochargers or emissions management system performance.

The doctoral student's duties include:

- Planning and conducting independent research work within the centers' research areas

- Presentation of research at conferences and meetings

- Teaching activities on M.Sc. level in relevant courses

- Participation in higher education equivalent to 60p ects

Qualifications

We are looking for highly motivated individuals with excellent academic backgrounds, who are interested in conducting doctoral research in combustion engine technology in the future powertrains.

The applicant shall have:

- M.Sc. degree in Engineering Physics, Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Energy, Environment, Chemical Engineering or equivalent.

- Good knowledge in thermodynamics and / or flow mechanics corresponding to the courses offered at the KTH up to the level of M.Sc.

- Good ability to communicate verbally and in writing English

- Ability to work independently and in a group

- High ambition level and self motivation

- Good grades, rating top 20%

Meriting experience:

- Experience of matlab, CFD or relevant 1-D engine simulation tools along with programming habits

- Experience of experimental methods for measuring the performance and emissions of combustion engines, as well as pressure, temperature and velocity in transient flows.

We are looking for you with a high level of ambition and who have a strong self motivational drive. You have good teamwork with a professional approach. Furthermore, your ability to formulate and analyze complex questions is good and you can build new knowledge based on this.
