Description of the subject area

Oncology concerning solid tumors in adults is an active area of research and clinical development with precision medicine as its goal. The subject encompasses preclinical, translational, and clinical studies of solid tumors in adults. The studies may for example concern:

  • molecular subgroups within tumors and/or between patients and of tumor biological as well as clinical relevance
  • the understanding of how mechanisms of resistance develop and change due to disease progression and treatment
  • knowledge of how established and new treatments may be optimized
  • the studies of biomarkers for how treatments may be tailored for individual patients to as far as possible minimize side-effects.

Your mission

The Professorship has a focus on research. The position is placed at the Department of Oncology-Pathology at Karolinska Institutet with 51 percent of full-time,together with 49 percent of full-time employment at a Medical Unit within Theme Cancer at the Karolinska UniversityHospital in Solna.

We are looking for a person who is an academic leader within oncology and conducts high quality research within the area. You shall supervise PhD students and younger researchers and develop the area through collaborations with colleagues locally, nationally and internationally. The position also includes to teach within basic education for example within the medical program, and contribute to specialist education and PhD-education in oncology, as well as contribute to the department’s common activities. You shall also actively participate and lead the development of oncological treatment, as well as contribute to spreading new knowledge within the healthcare and the society.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an employment as Professor with focus on research the applicant must havedemonstrated good pedagogical expertise and excellent scientific expertise and clinical expertise.  

You shall be a leading and internationally recognized researcher with clear potential for future development and show an own line of research within oncological research about solid tumors in adults.

You shall be a clinically active specialist physician in oncology with extensive knowledge of clinical oncological treatment of solid tumors in adults.

You shall in your clinical practice be well experienced in oncological clinical routine work such as patient facility and hospital ward services, and clinical conferences, and mentoring residents as well as junior specialist doctors.

The employment will be combined with an employment as a specialist physician, assistant chief physician or chief physician in oncology at a Medical Unit within Theme Cancer at the Karolinska University Hospital in Solna and therefore you must have a Swedish MD with specialist competence in oncology, as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden.

Since the position includes clinical work, you must, besides English, demonstrate proficiency in Swedish, Norwegian or Danish (C1 level according to the common European reference scale (CERS).

Assessment criteria

The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific expertise (3), pedagogical expertise (1), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (1) and clinical expertise (2).

For employment as Professor at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure are applied in relation to established profile of employment.

It is particularly meritorious that you have shown

  • Active scientific production of high quality within oncology and precision medicine with a clear senior role as principal investigator
  • Ability to obtain external research funding as main applicant in competition and hold ongoing own project grants
  • Experience from clinical trials in oncology

It is meritorious that you have shown

  • Supervision of doctoral students and newly disputed within the field in an experimental and clinical environment
  • Successful research within the field in collaboration with researches within the own department and externally

It is a requirement that you have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education (or have equivalent competence), as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If you lack such education at the time of the employment, you must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
