Job description

Are you inspired by numerical modelling of real-life phenomena using scientific computing (SC)?
Are you fascinated by the emerging field of machine learning (ML)?
Are you our next PhD-candidate in scientific machine learning or SciML (combining SC and ML)?
Are you eager to work on the mathematical foundation of the next generation of algorithms?
Are you passionate about numerical linear algebra (NLA)?

The PhD project will explore the use of NLA tools in SciML for the solution of large-scale problems stemming from the discretization of partial differential equations. Interaction between the field of NLA and optimization will be explored, with the purpose of designing faster, more robust, and reliable methods. Possible research directions include but are not limited to: (i) development of new theory for different iterative methods inspired by ML (ii) use theoretical insights to design more reliable implementations; (iii) development of practical methods and application to benchmark problems. The focus will depend on and will be adapted to the interest of the student.

It is not expected that you know much about SciML or traditional ML, but you should have an interest in learning more. There may be opportunities for you to attend specific training and engage with researchers from different horizons working in the field. You will join the Scientific Computing group and be an active member of the Centre for Analysis, Scientific Computing and Applications (https://casa.win.tue.nl/home/)

Job requirements

  • A master’s degree in applied mathematics or a connected field with a strong mathematical and computational background.
  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team and interested in collaborating with industrial partners.
  • Motivated to develop your teaching skills and coach students.
  • Fluent in spoken and written English (C1 level).

Conditions of employment

A meaningful job in a dynamic and ambitious university, in an interdisciplinary setting and within an international network. You will work on a beautiful, green campus within walking distance of the central train station. In addition, we offer you:

  • Full-time employment for four years, with an intermediate evaluation (go/no-go) after nine months. You will spend 10% of your employment on teaching tasks.
  • Salary and benefits (such as a pension scheme, paid pregnancy, and maternity leave, partially paid parental leave) in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, scale P (min. €2,770 max. €3,539).
  • A year-end bonus of 8.3% and annual vacation pay of 8%.
  • High-quality training programs and other support to grow into a self-aware, autonomous scientific researcher. At TU/e we challenge you to take charge of your own learning process.
  • An excellent technical infrastructure, on-campus children's day care and sports facilities.
  • An allowance for commuting, working from home and internet costs.
  • A Staff Immigration Team and a tax compensation scheme (the 30% facility) for international candidates.
