CMCC Position
Global Coasts as the new frontier Program Director
(Deadline: May 3rd, 2024)

Join Us in Innovative Research: Lead Our Program on Global Coasts as the new frontier

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Are you ready to embark on an extraordinary journey that explores the dynamic interface between society and the physical world, focusing on the diverse and critical environments of global coastlines? We are looking for a talented leader to direct our innovative research program focused on advancing the development of a portable modelling infrastructure for coastal systems and drive meaningful impact through rigorous fundamental and applied research.

Over the last decade, CMCC has experienced extraordinary growth. We are now embarking on a new chapter of our journey, launching four cutting-edge Strategic Programs that will further boost CMCC’s global position in climate change research. One of these is our program on the new frontier of global coasts.

We are looking for an experienced leader, with substantial international leadership and scientific track record, to lead this program. CMCC has considerable work on coastal across all three of its institutes. It is among the world leaders in study of phenomena at the many scales that involve the coasts. It is also a large modelling center with significant and long-term investments in ocean modelling and observations, and has competences in the modelling of ship routing, oil spills, modern coastal management, and risk reduction.

Your job will be to work with our three Institute Directors to organize our assets and project work on global coasts and synthesize a strategy to push the boundaries of scientific exploration. The three institutes of CMCC will come together under your guidance to develop and execute a plan that will:

  1. define a scientific operational of what the global coast is - from “place” to “process”;
  2. develop a set of use-cases, including a set of real-world partners, and
  3. identify the key outstanding scientific questions that will guide scientific research on this program.

You will develop the narrative and scientific plan that will guide our work on global coasts across all three institutes, and will be responsible for expanding our reach both in terms of fundraising and scientific networks. You will build a high performing team of cross-cutting experts who will coordinate and amplify the work of CMCC’s divisions and be the face and voice of CMCC at international fora and events focused on global coasts. You will also work with colleagues across CMCC to ensure we capitalize on the considerable investments we are making in data science and machine learning methods.

Ultimately, you will guide CMCC to develop research and applications that have impact and you will be part of a high performing team that intends to lead CMCC in its next period of sustained growth.
