ABSTRACT

Diamond is well known for its outstanding properties such as its hardness, high thermal conductivity or high electrical resistivity. Mostly synthesized by CVD process as thin films, diamond is already used nowdays for high performance applications, such as high power electronic devices, protective coatings or for thermal management. An alternative to diamond thin films resides in the synthesis of diamond-based polymer composite. Indeed, diamond particles exhibit the same properties as diamond thin films. Mainly produced by crushing of macroscopic synthetic or natural diamond crystals, these diamond particles are commercially available, with diameters ranging from nm to tens of µm. However, the use of diamond particles as filler in composite has not been so far extensively studied, especially when compared to other hard materials, while they gather several assets such as their carbon-based surface chemistry, the possibility to adapt their geometry and a large panel of sizes. This PhD work takes place in this context, and aims at thoroughly investigating the potential of diamond particles as filler for composite materials. The study will focus on the diamond/polymer interfaces, looking at the effect of the diameter, morphology, polydispersity, surface chemistry (with adapted functionalization). Based on these parameters, a model will then be developed to predict the thermal and mechanical performances. Synthesis of the modified diamond particles and of the composite materials as well as their basic characterizations will be realized at Diamond Sensors Laboratory (CEA/DRT, LIST Institute). Advanced characterizations by X-ray and neutron diffusion techniques will be handled through the collaboration with Leon Brillouin Laboratory (Jacques Jestin, CEA/DRF) and synchrotron SOLEIL (Thomas Bizien), giving access to local organisation of the filler in the composite, for diameters ranging from nm to hundreds of nm. The composite materials developed and synthesized during this PhD work will be, for exemple, evaluated by CEA collaborators (CEA/DAM) already involved in the development of high performance materials.
