The Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing is a senior scientific and technical federal institute which is based in Berlin. As a departmental research institute of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, we conduct research and testing, and provide counselling on how to protect people, the environment and material goods. The focus on our activities in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry is the technical safety of products and processes.

Vehicles with new energy sources (NET) are increasingly used to conserve resources and to reduce CO2emissions. Within a BMBF funded project physical phenomena will be explored related to the use of new energy sources, which can occur in underground traffic areas. The research focuses at the interaction between smoke gases and extinguishing systems, as well as strategies for firefighting e.g fire sprinklers or water mist extinguishing systems in case of battery fire.
