starting as soon as possible, we are looking for a

Scientific Assistant (f/m)

Pay grade 13 TVöD
Temporary contract until the 31st of July 2020
Full time/ suitable as part-time employment

The Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing is a senior scientific and technical federal institute which is based in Berlin.  As a departmental research institute of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, we conduct research and testing, and provide counselling on how to protect people, the environment and material goods. The focus on our activities in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry is the technical safety of products and processes.

Your responsibilities include:

Vehicles with new energy sources (NET) are increasingly used to conserve resources and to reduce CO2emissions. Within a BMBF funded project physical phenomena will be explored related to the use of new energy sources, which can occur in underground traffic areas. The research focuses at the interaction between smoke gases and extinguishing systems, as well as strategies for firefighting e.g fire sprinklers or water mist extinguishing systems in case of battery fire. The research includes:

  • Analysis of the safety of transport facilities taking into account the smoke spread, the ventilation and the type of the extinguishing medium
  • Research on mathematical and physical models (E.g. turbulence, combustion, multi-phase models) to model fire and extinguishing processes within building structures
  • Planning and implementation of fire and extinguishing experiments
  • Documentation and evaluation of experimental and numerical results
  • Publication and presentation of results, as well as interdisciplinary exchange
  • Opportunity to undertake doctoral research.

Your qualifications:

  • Successful scientific degree (Diploma/Master) specializing in civil engineering, physical engineering, process engineering or a similar discipline
  • Knowledge in modelling multi-phase flows with CFD methods
  • Knowledge in modelling the substance spread and flame propagation with CFD methods would be an advantage
  • Experience in conducting of experiments connected the willingness at times on the BAM area in Horstwalde to work with TTS
  • Very good knowledge of German and English language (spoken and written)
  • High level of commitment and creativity, independent way of working, cooperation and teamwork
  • Ability to publish and to present scientific results
  • Willingness to carry out missions
