PhD - Early Stage Researcher (f/m)

Applications are invited for a PhD position under the supervision of Prof. Richard Leach (University of Nottingham, UK) and the industrial promotor Dipl.-Ing. Franz Helmli (Alicona Imaging GmbH, Austria) as part of the EU-funded Marie Skłodowska-Curie program.

The full-time post is offered on a fixed-term 36 month contract. If needed, individual arrangements deviating from this scheme can be considered. The successful candidate will be located at Alicona’s headquarter in Graz, Austria, and additionally spend several month at the University of Nottingham, UK, which is the PhD granting organization.

The post benefits from a attractive salary, plus mobility and family allowances as applicable.

Job description

The objective of this Early Stage Researcher (ESR) is to develop a hybrid instrument comprising a vision system for fast defect detection and a focus variation system for 3D topography measurement in an SLM machine. Specifically, the ESR will develop the focus variation system and characterize the system for 3D surface topography measurement of SLM-produced parts (concentrating on defects identified by another ESR). A challenge in the development of the system are certainly the requirement to have a high speed measuring sensor with high metrological requirements and the physical design constraints of the SLM machine. The final hybrid system is integrated into the SLM machine for in-process characterization.

» Basic knowledge in digital image processing is preferential

» Experience in optical system design and modelling is preferential
