Åbo Akademi University (ÅAU) invites applications to the position as Professor or Associate Professor (level 2) in Industrial Energy Technology at the Faculty of Science and Engineering.  The position is placed in Turku, Finland. The employment starts in the autumn of 2024, or as agreed. The position is placed at the subject cluster Process and Energy Technology at the Faculty of Science and Engineering.

The recruitment is executed within the ÅAU tenure track system. If appointed as professor, the employment will be permanent. A person holding a tenure track position on level two as associate professor is employed on a fixed-term contract for four years. A successful evaluation facilitates the advancement from associate professor to a permanent position as professor.

WORK DESCRIPTION AND QUALIFICATIONS

The field of activity is energy technology in process industry with a focus on the impact of hydrogen economy in industrial decarbonisation. The candidate will also contribute to the teaching in the study program in Chemical and Process Engineering, the Master's program in Sustainable Chemical and Process Engineering and the double Master's program Erasmus Mundus Master in Technology and Management for Circular Economy (IMATEC).

A professor shall carry out scientific research, provide research-based tuition, follow developments in science, participate in societal interaction, and in national and international cooperation within one’s field of responsibility in accordance with the Universities Act (558/2009). Associate professors' tasks include conducting independent research, leading research projects, and procuring research funding. Associate professors participate in teaching and supervision in general a third of the working time.

A professor is required to have a doctoral degree, solid scientific and pedagogical competence, the ability to lead research projects and acquire research funding, experience from international research collaboration and leadership skills. 

An associate professor is required to have a doctoral degree, considerable research experience, the potential to lead research teams and acquire research funding, experience from international research collaboration and formal pedagogical competence.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

The language requirements at Åbo Akademi University are defined in Section 78 of the University Act (558/2009) and in § 1 and 2 the Åbo Akademi University internal language instructions (25.2.2010). 

For teaching position, native Finnish citizens are required to have excellent proficiency in Swedish (written and oral) and sufficient proficiency in Finnish. Applicants that have not yet a certificate of their Swedish language skills can demonstrate their skills and, if necessary, take a language test arranged by the ÅAU Language Board. Foreigners and non-native Finnish citizens are exempt from the requirement to have knowledge of Finnish. However, as the administrative and teaching language of the university primarily is Swedish, the person appointed is expected to acquire such knowledge of Swedish that he or she will be able to participate successfully in teaching and administrative tasks in Swedish in the future. The university offers active support in learning Swedish.

Oral and written knowledge of English is necessary for managing the duties of the position successfully.

SALARY AND WORKING TIME

The salary for professors is set on levels 8-11 and for associate professors on levels 6-7 of the job demand level for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid. For new employments a trial period applies.

4 ) A plan that describes the forthcoming research (max. 4 pages).

5 ) A description of the applicant’s view on the position and on leadership (max. 3 pages).
