The Faculty of Technology at the University of Turku is looking for two Assistant or Associate Professors (tenure track) in Robotics.

Both tenure track positions are in the Faculty of Technology’s Department of Computing’s Robotics and Autonomous Systems unit. The unit’s globally connected research groups apply robotics and artificial intelligence across diverse fields. Our core focus lies in developing heterogeneous, multifunctional robotic fleets for various applications within industrial and environmental settings. The unit has significant external project portfolios at both national and international levels.

Who we are looking for

We invite applications from highly motivated researchers in robotics with expertise in machine learning. Examples of areas of research that are a good fit for this position include active perception and understanding of complex and unstructured environments, interaction with the environment and enhanced human-machine interaction, robot design, and robot learning. We value experience in developing and applying machine learning algorithms for real-world applications in, e.g., infrastructure or environmental monitoring, search and rescue, agriculture and forestry, surveillance, construction or logistics. Practical experience with physical robotic platforms (aerial, ground or surface robotics) is particularly desirable for one of the positions, while expertise in the broader application of ML-based solutions is considered a strength for the other. Teaching is an important part of the position—we value teaching experience and pedagogical studies.

We consider applicants’ merits broadly and value, for example, broad academic, professional, and societal networks; societal impact and outreach activities; experience in technology transfer; industrial and entrepreneurial experience; and multidisciplinary collaboration.

The successful applicants may be appointed to a fixed-term associate or assistant professorship (tenure track) depending on their previous academic merits.

  • For the position of Assistant Professor, we seek proactive researchers and teachers beyond their post doc phase yet still at their early academic career, and who already have a proven track record of scientific research.
  • For the position of Associate Professor, we emphasize a international track record of scientific research, teaching experience and societal influence. In addition to these, we value a track record of acquiring external research funding and business collaboration.
