East Asian University Teacher specialized in East Asian studies, especially in contemporary Japan, a fixed-term position of August 1, 2015 – July 31, 2017
The position is at the Department of Philosophy, Contemporary History and Social Science, at the Centre for East Asian Studies
Teaching at the Centre for East Asian Studies at the University of Turku is focused on contemporary East Asian societies from a social scientific perspective. The position of a university lecturer is primarily a teaching position that includes lecturing and small group teaching of Minor and Major students on the contemporary society of Japan and East Asia. Additionally, the university lecturer’s responsibilities also include the supervision of doctoral and Master’s theses. Lecturer shares the responsibility of the annual curriculum planning and study counseling with the Centre’s other teachers. The lecturer is also responsible for managing and developing Finnish University Network for Asian Studies’ virtual education in cooperation with the other teachers in the network, which the Centre coordinates. The lecture is further expected to engage in original scientific research and publishing. The working language of the position is English. The person selected is expected to participate in student selection, take on administrative and societal and regional impact duties and other tasks deemed necessary by the unit.
The selected applicant is expected to hold a Master’s degree from a relevant field and the ability to give high quality research based teaching and thesis supervision.
The following qualifications are considered when reviewing the merits of each applicant: scientific work, knowledge of the field in question, teaching experience and pedagogical training especially in virtual pedagogy; the ability to create study materials and other merits gained from teaching experience as well as a demonstration lesson. A doctoral degree is regarded as an advantage.
The lectureship requires an excellent grasp on the field of research on contemporary Japan society and a solid experience of teaching on the university level. Recent publication and teaching activity and other academic merits will play a role in the selection process.
The salary will be determined in accordance with the Finnish university salary system for teaching and research personnel at levels 4 – 6 on the task-specific chart, between 2 475,31 – 3 340,77 euros per month. In addition a performance component reflecting an evaluation of the position-holder’s personal achievement will be added. The personal performance component is a maximum of 46.3 % of the task-specific base salary.
