East Asian University Lecturer specialized in East Asian studies, especially contemporary Korean society, a fixed-term position of August 1, 2017 – July 31, 2019

Teaching at the Centre for East Asian Studies at the University of Turku is focused on contemporary East Asian societies from a social scientific perspective. The position of a university lecturer is primarily a teaching position that includes lecturing and small group teaching of Minor and Major students on the contemporary society of Korea and East Asia. Additionally, the university lecturer shares the responsibility of the annual curriculum planning and study counseling with the Centre’s teachers. The lecturer’s responsibilities also include the supervision of doctoral and Master’s theses. The lecturer is expected to engage in original scientific research and publishing. The working language of the position is English. The person selected is expected to participate in student selection, take on administrative and societal and regional impact duties and other tasks deemed necessary by the unit.
The selected applicant is expected to hold a PhD degree from a relevant field and the ability to give high quality research based teaching and thesis supervision.
The following qualifications are considered when reviewing the merits of each applicant: scientific work, knowledge of the field in question, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to create study materials and other merits gained from teaching experience as well as a demonstration lesson.
The lectureship requires an excellent grasp on the field of research on contemporary Korean society and a solid experience of teaching on the university level. Recent publication and teaching activity and other academic merits will play a role in the selection process.
The salary will be determined in accordance with the Finnish university salary system for teaching and research personnel at levels 5 – 7 on the task-specific chart, between 2 865,30 – 3 851,33 euros per month. In addition a performance component reflecting an evaluation of the position-holder’s personal achievement will be added. The personal performance component is a maximum of 46.3 % of the task-specific base salary.
