Director of Research Services

In the autumn of 2016, Tampere University of Technology and the University of Tampere sought a director of research services to lead and develop joint research support services. This job advertisement is now published again as the starting date for the new university group has been moved to early 2019. Applicants who responded to the earlier advertisement are automatically taken into consideration again, unless they no longer wish to take part in the application procedure.

Initially, the university’s research support services will employ approximately 20 people. The support services will offer expert assistance for research project preparations, provide information on funding application opportunities, encourage researchers and research groups to seek supplementary research funding, give support for research project coordination as well as offer other expert services, such as support for risk management and interest group collaboration, for research projects. 

Job description:

As a director of research services, you will be responsible for the planning and creation of the joint research support services for the new Tampere3 university group. You will be in charge of the systematic development of supplementary funding in collaboration with the university management and research personnel. You will lead and develop the research support services and act as supervisor to the expert staff. You will work in close cooperation with various interest groups and funding providers in this position.


Candidates are expected to have:

  • prior experience in international research funding
  • excellent people and cooperation skills
  • vision and ability for operations development
  • prior experience in supervisory work
  • a master’s degree
  • excellent spoken and written skills in Finnish and English.

We also appreciate:

  • prior experience in universities as an operating environment
  • prior experience in and an understanding of how a service organisation operates and how it should be led
  • a doctoral degree
  • other practical experience that supports the successful management of the duties.

The salary will be based on the job demands and the employee's personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System (YPJ). The advertised position is placed on the job demand levels 12–13 for administrative and auxiliary staff, on top of which a salary share based on personal performance will be applied.

Trial period:

The appointment is subject to the satisfactory completion of a trial period of four months.


The employment contract will be valid until further notice and the position will be filled from 1 September 2017 onwards or as mutually agreed.

Candidate evaluation in the recruitment process will involve video interviews, face-to-face interviews in Tampere, and aptitude assessments carried out by an external service provider.

In the first phase, we may invite applicants to take part in video interviews.

Face-to-face interviews in Tampere will be carried out during weeks 14 and 15.
