Department of Media, Culture and Social Sciences is part of the Faculty of Social Sciences. The department offers study programs and carries out research within Societal Safety, Change Management, Sociology, Arts and Culture, Television and Media Production and Journalism. There are currently 50 employees including research fellows and postdocs, and 840 students at the department.
The University of Stavanger invites applications for a position as associate professor of sociology at Department of Media, Culture and Social Sciences. The position is vacant from 01.01.2018.

The responsibilities comprise research, supervision, teaching, student assessment related to the field above and administration. The academic qualification required for the positionis a Ph.D. in Sociology or corresponding competence within the academic field.
The evaluation of the applications will take into consideration the following:

Excellent interpersonal skills
The appointee must also be able to document pedagogical and didactic skills related to higher education, or accept to enter a university teaching courses within a period of two years from commencement. Theapplication should include a reflection on teaching skills.
Use of varied teaching methods is a priority at the university. The appointee must be prepared to adopt different methods and different digital learning resources. Associate Professor will the first yearparticipate in “NyTi” which is the universities guidance and integration program for new teachers.
Qualifications within the areas of creativity, innovation and popularization of research will be given emphasis.
The appointee must be able to document basic competence in teaching skills or, alternatively, accept to enter a program that provides such competence within a period of two years.
The language of instruction is normally Norwegian. The appointee must have a good command of oral and written Norwegian or another Scandinavian language, or acquire such language competence within a period of two years. The appointee must also be prepared to teach classes in English.
If there are no fully qualified applicants, temporary employment may be offered for a period of three years with a view to acquiring full qualifications and tenure. The applicant must be judged to have the necessary abilities to acquire such qualifications within this period.
The position of professor is salaried according to the State Salary Code, l.pl 17.510, code 1011, ofNOK 500.000 - 600.000 per annum. In special cases higher salaries may apply.
The position provides for automatic membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, which guarantees favorable retirement benefits. Members may also apply for home investment loans at favorable interest rates.

The academic field forthe position is sociology.
The appointee shall, together with the other faculty members, conduct research and contribute to the development of research at the UiS. The appointee shall conduct courses, supervise students and participate in student assessment within the field for the position and administrative duties.
The position will have particular focus on teaching and advising students in the bachelor’s degree program in sociology, though responsibilities might include similar activities at the master’s level and the doctoral program at the department. Relevant teaching responsibilities at the bachelor program are organizational sociology, research methods and theory.
It is expected that the appointee will do research and publish in scientific journals and books. The appointee is expected to support and participate in the other activities at the faculty and also to accept responsibility for interdepartmental programs or projects.
It is a strategic goal for the University of Stavanger in general and the Department of Media, Culture and Social Sciences in particular, to increase its portfolio of externally funded projects, particularly from the Norwegian Centre for International Cooperation in Education, the Norwegian Research Council, and the EU. Therefore, it might be an advantage to have experience in developing and implementing externally funded research and educational projects, both national and international. The committee will also take into consideration other qualifying experiences of significance, such as interpersonal skills.
The University emphasizes excellence in teaching quality and requires that teachingstaff has educational and didactic expertise in higher education. Pedagogical competence can be documented with diploma /certificate from relevant formal educational training related to higher education. Didactic competence can be documented withv aried didactic work in higher education. Regulations for assessment of teaching skills are available from the Faculty.
Applicants will be screened by an expert committee on the basis of submitted material. The committeewill particularly consider the applicants' submitted scholarly and scientific work and their teaching skills. Experience from popularization, journalism, university politics and administration, and other relevant and documented qualifications for the position can also be considered.
