The University of Helsinki Faculty of Arts is Finland’s oldest and largest unit of teaching and research in the arts in terms of the organisation and selection of its disciplines.

The Department of Finnish, Finno-Ugrian and Scandinavian Studies is Finland’s largest and most diverse centre of research and academic education in Finnish, Swedish and related languages as well as literature produced in them. The Department is an internationally renowned centre of learning in Finno-Ugrian and Nordic languages as well as home to the world’s largest concentration of Finnish language and literature research and academic teaching. The Department offers teaching in eight disciplines. As of the autumn term 2017, the teaching will be provided in one Bachelor’s programme and four Master’s programmes. The Department’s research focuses on the study of interaction, cognitive linguistics and construction grammar, language contacts, linguistic change and variation, texts in society, and the genres and worlds of modernism.

The Department of Finnish, Finno-Ugrian and Scandinavian Studies, University of Helsinki, invites applications for the position of

UNIVERSITY LECTURER IN DANISH

for a permanent appointment as of 1 August 2017. The field of the position is Danish language and literature. There is a four-month trial period for the position.

The position is in the discipline of Nordic languages, which is part of the Bachelor’s Programme in the Languages and Literatures of Finland and the Master’s Programme in Scandinavian Languages and Literature from 2017 onwards. The programmes train native-speaker and Finnish-speaker experts in Swedish as well as experts in the other Scandinavian languages. Graduates can serve as mother tongue and second language teachers as well as experts for administrative and third-sector positions in Finland and the other Nordic countries.

The present university lecturer is responsible for teaching in Danish language and literature to Finnish- and Swedish-speaking students of the Bachelor’s and Master’s programme. The university lecturer must also carry out independent scientific research, examine and supervise theses and dissertations, and attend to administrative duties as jointly agreed.

According to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, holders of university lectureships are required to possess an applicable doctoral degree, to have the ability to provide high quality research-based teaching and to supervise theses and dissertations.

According to the Government Decree on Universities, university lecturers are required to be proficient in the language in which they provide instruction. The appointee to the present position will provide instruction in Danish. The university lecturer must also have at least satisfactory spoken and written skills in Finnish. Foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish may be exempted from this requirement without a separate application.

When assessing the qualifications of the applicants, attention shall be paid to scientific publications and other research results of scientific value, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce learning materials, other teaching merits, and a demonstration of teaching.

The salary for the position will be based on levels 5 to 7 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The monthly salary will total approximately €3,100–4,400.
