One postdoc position on ERC-funded projet TeachersCareers (Educational Policy)

The Interdisciplinary Research Group in Socialisation, education and training (GIRSEF) based in the Catholic University of Louvain (UCL), offers one postdoctoral fellowship in the context of the research project TeachersCareers, a five-years research project funded by the European Research Council  (PI Pr. Xavier Dumay, StG – 2016_714641).

This project constitutes the first systematic comparative project in Europe aimed at understanding the changing nature of teacher policy, the evolving status of the teaching profession, and the increasing fragmentation of the labor markets for teachers and teachers’ careers. The study will be conducted in three national contexts (France, England, and French-speaking Belgium), in partnership with Oxford University, IREDU at the University of Burgundy, and the Ecole Normale Supérieure, in Lyon. ERC granted projects offer the opportunity to build up ambitious research teams addressing new and emerging fields that introduce unconventional and innovative approaches and research problems.

In the context of the Teacherscareers project, the postdoctoral fellow will:

  • develop tasks of research design (with a focus on survey design) in direct collaboration with the PI and the research team;
  • supervise and participate to data collection related to teacher policy at the European and national levels (interviews and documents), and to the evolution of teacher supply (identification and structuration of relevant national databases);
  • coordinate and conduct qualitative analyses of the European discourse on the teaching profession and of the national political trajectories addressing the management of the teachers’ careers, and quantitative analyses of the evolution of teacher supply in the three national contexts;
  • support and participate to the training of the two PhD candidates, in close collaboration with the PI;
  • participate to the dissemination of the project’s results, through research papers, communications at conferences, and web communications.

Skills/Qualifications

Applicants must be in possession of a PhD in Education Sciences, Sociology, or Political Sciences, with an expertise on education policies and interest in the European transformations related to education. He/she should:

  • be experienced in conducting fieldwork;
  • be an expert in qualitative policy analyses (discourse and documents analyses);
  • have preferably demonstrated competences in quantitative analyses of survey and administrative datasets;
  • write and speak fluently in English and French (for the fieldwork in England, France and at the European level), or at least have a strong willingness to develop his/her competencies in French as fast as possible;
  • credit ability of independent thinking and writing;
  • manifest interest and demonstrate competencies for team collaboration.

The postdoctoral fellow will be employed for 24 months full-time, starting ideally on September the 1st of 2017. Preferably the candidate will be in a situation of international mobility, meaning that he/she has not resided or carried out his/her main activity (employment, studies, etc.) in Belgium for more than 24 months in the last three years. The candidate will conduct fieldwork in Belgium, France, and England.

Benefits

The Fellowship amounts to approximately EUR 2300 per month (plus social security contributions).

Selection process

Applicants should submit: a) a curriculum vitae, b) two writing samples (article, paper, book chapter or similar), c) a motivation letter with, among other things, details regarding how the applicant meets the criteria for the position, and d) one reference letter and the names and contact details of two other potential referees. Applications should be sent to Pr. Xavier Dumay (xavier.dumay@uclouvain.be) before April the 30th, 2017. Skype or face-to-face interviews with short-listed candidates will take place in May 2017. In the subject of the email, please specify the position: “TeachersCareers application Postdoc”.
