MPI-SWS is part of the world-renowned network of Max Planck research institutes (MPIs) and offers doctoral programs in collaboration with universities. Graduate students are involved in research from day one, and receive individual training and mentorship from MPI-SWS faculty, preparing them for leadership in academic or industrial research. All admitted students receive full funding for the duration of the program.
Admission to the graduate program is highly competitive. Successful candidates should have a four-year Bachelor's degree or a Master's degree from a leading institution of higher education, creativity and aptitude for research in a dynamic multi-cultural team, and proficiency in spoken and written English. Knowledge of the German language is not required.
Qualified candidates should apply at https://apply.mpi-sws.org. Applications are accepted throughout the year. We make decisions four times a year, based on applications received until December 31, March 31, June 30, and September 30. The institute is committed to increasing the representation of minorities, women, and persons with physical disabilities in computer science. We particularly encourage such individuals to apply.
MPI-SWS is located in Kaiserslautern and Saarbrücken, in the tri-border area of Germany, France, and Luxembourg. The institute pursues curiosity-driven research on fundamental computer and information science problems.
