Researcher in History of Science, Technology and Environment

KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm has grown to become one of Europe’s leading technical and engineering universities, as well as a key centre of intellectual talent and innovation. We are Sweden’s largest technical research and learning institution and home to students, researchers and faculty from around the world. Our research and education covers a wide area including natural sciences and all branches of engineering, as well as in architecture, industrial management, urban planning, history and philosophy.

The School of Architecture and the Built Environment is one of ten schools at KTH. We employ about 700 people and we have about 3 000 students. We have a unique breadth of subject range where we educate and research on future society, about how cities, buildings and infrastructure should be designed and built. On how to create a good living environment for people while taking into account environmental, energy, economic and social factors. We are proud of the good relations we have with industry and other players in the world.

The operations of the School of Architecture and the Built Environment are concerned with the future of societies – how our cities, buildings and infrastructure will develop. This includes considerations of growth, technology, environment and ethical challenges and risks. Our education programs and our research include technology as well as the humanities and social sciences.

Job description

The position is located within the Division of History of Science, Technology and Environment, where we conduct research and teaching from a historical perspective. Our starting point is that technology and science are cultural elements that shape and drive the conditions for life on earth, just as historical studies are essential for understanding the contemporary world and future changes. The position will be part of the project Greening the Poles: Science, the Environment, and the Creation of the Modern Arctic and Antarctic (GRETPOL). GRETPOL is a major project funded by the European Research Council (ERC) with the aim of exploring the development of environmental science and politics in the polar regions during the period 1945-1991 from a transnational historical perspective.

This research project is concerned with collecting and analysing archival material from Argentina, Chile, Japan, and Russia. The main aim of the work is to explore how certain international conventions concerning environmental protection and scientific cooperation in the polar regions evolved between the 1960s and 1990s. The successful candidate will collect and work with archival material from the above-mentioned countries in addition to potentially conducting oral histories. The successful candidate will be part of a larger research team and will contribute to jointly-authored publications.

Qualifications

The applicant must have high competence in Spanish (Latin American), Russian, and Japanese. No exceptions to this requirement will be made. The applicant must be able to fluently read and write English at a level sufficient for advanced scholarship. The applicant is expected to have experience with historical research methods.

Ability and willingness to conduct collaborative research. Willingness to conduct extended archival research visits.  The successful candidate must hold a PhD or equivalent
