Join the research profile GRACE aiming at accelerating the green transition in the manufacturing industry!

We like to welcome you to Jönköping University, Shool of Engineering and our department of Product development, Production and Design (PPD). We are approximately 35 employees and conduct education and research in integrated and platform-enabled product and production development. We need to expand our research group with new talents to support us in our new initiative, a research profile, focused on Green acceleration through integrated and platform-enabled product realization (GRACE).

The department is now looking for three (3) doctoral students to the graduate school Industrial Product Realisation in the subject areas Production Systems and Machine Design for the research profile GRACE.

Background

Through integrated and platform-enabled processes, GRACE seeks to optimize resource utilization while maximizing customer value. Central to GRACE's efforts is product realisation, which involves designing and producing solutions that not only meet customer needs but also adhere to sustainability and circularity requirements. Its objectives include supporting the industry's long-term success in the green transition and strengthening School of Engineering, Jönköping University, in integrated and platform-enabled product realisation supporting sustainability and circularity.

Job description

In the role as doctoral student you will collaborate closely with industry partners, participate in project meetings, workshops, and conferences to disseminate research findings and gather insights from other experts in the field. Your main task will be research studies and research project work focusing in one of the following research projects:

Research project RESHARE (Shared Understanding and Requirements Management for Green Transition) – two positions

The green transition brings forth a plethora of new policies, regulations, standards, methods, and technologies. Manufacturing companies face the challenge of keeping pace with this rapid advancement and require assistance in recognizing key implications for product realisation and translate these into requirements for product and production system development. Circular manufacturing and prolonged product lifecycles will have consequences on product and production system designs, on system- and part-level. Platform-based product realisation also requires cross-functional integration. To succeed, it is essential to have a common vision and set corporate objectives, make a systematic breakdown of objectives across the organisation and develop means for shared understanding and integration across disciplines.

Candidate 1 will primarily conduct research and development in collaboration with industry partners to pinpoint crucial changes guided by the green transition. The research will then focus on the development of necessary support to transform these changes into actionable requirements and platform principles for circular manufacturing and the lifecycles of new products. The research will include development of methods, tools and demonstrators and, depending on the direction of the work, digital modelling and machine learning methods.

Candidate 2 will primarily engage in research and development in collaboration with industry partners, concentrating on means to facilitate knowledge integration and foster shared understanding to support the green transition. One potential avenue involves leveraging performance indicators tied to the green transition to enhance shared understanding, vertically and horizontally within a manufacturing company. However, alternative approaches may also hold relevance. Documented experience with knowledge integration or boundary-crossing theories is advantageous for this position.

Research project In2Circ (Information Needs to Drive Products and Production Towards Circularity) – one position

Focus will be on understanding the information needs for circular strategies, such as remanufacturing, refurbishment, and recycling. You will work closely with industry partners to identify their information needs and challenges related to circularity.

The candidate will primarily engage in research and development in collaboration with industry partners, focused on circular strategies and solutions for efficiently managing and sharing information across product lifecycles and production systems to support the circular economy. This will involve leveraging digital technologies and tools such as digital twin and digital passport and making use of Internet of things and sensor technology. This will improve transparency, traceability, and interoperability of information throughout the product lifecycle resulting in more sustainable products and production systems.

Upon application, state the preferred research project/s (RESHARE or In2Circ) and what direction you think is most interesting.

We offer you

  • A full-time employment, with 80% dedicated to research education and thereby related activities. Other duties, such as teaching, will not exceed 20% of the total working hours.
  • A stimulating research environment within the GRACE research profile, offering opportunities for professional growth and development.
  • Collaborative research opportunities with leading academic and industrial partners in the field of sustainable product realisation.
  • Access to state-of-the-art resources to support research activities.
  • Opportunity for publications and presentations at leading conferences and journals.
  • Competitive salary and benefits package.

Qualifications/Requirements

The successful candidate is truly committed, creative and curious. You enjoy collaborations, are capable of actualizing visions and ideas into practically feasible working methods and methodology and you have good communication skills. It is important that you have good analytical and systematic abilities.

It is important that you demonstrate skills to work efficiently, conscientiously, and professionally both independently and in a team environment with great responsibility and ability to finish dedicated assignments/tasks on time. Furthermore, you have a flexible work approach, are resilient to external stresses and can manage multiple work tasks simultaneously.

  • A master’s degree in a relevant field such as Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Product Development, Product Design, or Production Engineering and Management.
  • Strong analytical and research skills, with experience in qualitative and quantitative data analysis methods.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the capability to work effectively in interdisciplinary teams.
  • Proficient in academic-level English, both in verbal and written communication.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written Swedish is considered meritorious for candidates applying for these positions.
  • Strong motivation to contribute to research projects aimed at addressing sustainability challenges in product realisation.
  • A valid B category driver's license is required as travel will be necessary for work-related activities.
