INL is seeking a high level qualified, motivated and experienced researcher to take responsibility for the activities concerning the development of materials and devices leading to energy harvesting solutions for distributed sensor networks, including powering sensors for “in-vivo” applications.
Job Requirements and Key Responsibilities
The selected candidate should be experienced in at least one energy harvesting system adequate for the operation inside a living organism, such as energy harvesting based in electrochemical reactions (generating electrical power from naturally occurring chemical reactions inside the body), and a combination of these with other energy harvesting solutions such as mechanical vibration based systems, radio-frequency based systems, etc. The energy harvesting solutions must be developed having in mind the complete sensing system, including low power electronics and communications. A strong collaboration with INL´s systems engineering unit is envisaged. The candidate should be capable of covering all the aspects required to develop a fully functional energy harvesting system: material growth, micro/nanofabrication, electrical characterisation of the devices and benchmarking with alternative systems, integration with other devices/electronic systems. Issues related to bio-compatibility (preventing damage induced in the devices by surrounding tissues and also preventing any damage from the device into the body) should be taken into account.
Desired Skills and Experience
- PhD in Physics, Physical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering or other relevant subject is required;
- Over 10 years of active research after PhD;
- Previous experience in designing / fabricating energy harvesting systems, if possible for in-vivo biomedical applications;
- The candidate should have demonstrated capability of group leadership and project coordination;
- Applicants are also expected to have high quality publications in international journals and to be competitive in obtaining external research funding;
- Applicants with international mobility experience will be highly evaluated;
- Previous participation in collaborative international research projects is valued.
Creative thinking, interested in applied science, willing to work in a team, communication, organizational andreporting skills.
English is the working language of INL. Therefore, excellent communication skills in English are required.
