Doctoral Students in Molecular Medicine and Bioinformatics
starting in August 2017
Description: FIMM (www.fimm.fi) is an international research institute focusing on human genomics and personalized medicine at the Helsinki Institute for Life Science of the University of Helsinki. FIMM integrates molecular medicine research and technology centre and biobanking infrastructures under one roof promoting translational research in grand challenge projects, specifically, the impact of genome information from the Finnish population in personalized health and medicine, individualized cancer medicine, and digital molecular medicine. The areas of interest of the 18 research groups cover cancer, cardiovascular disease, immune disorders, and neurological and psychiatric diseases.
FIMM works together with the University of Helsinki Doctoral School in Health Sciences (DSHealth) and doctoral programmes (www.helsinki.fi/health/) to provide excellent research training and courses aimed at a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki.
As part of an annual international joint call of the Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine, we currently have two openings in the fields of molecular medicine, bioinformatics and computational biology for doctoral students who show outstanding potential to become independent researchers and who will significantly benefit from the FIMM-EMBL International PhD training. Qualifications and experience: Candidates are expected to have a relevant second cycle academic degree (MSc, MD or equivalent) in biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, biotechnology, cell biology, computer science, genetics, mathematics, medicine, or other related fields, obtained before the end of 2017. The successful candidate will have good problem solving, troubleshooting, and analytical skills. In addition, the candidate should be fluent in English, have good interpersonal and written and oral communication skills, and be able to work independently as well as within an international team.

Application review will begin after the close of the call. Top candidates will be evaluated by a selection committee of FIMM researchers and invited for an interview with the selection committee on 8 May 2017. The final candidates selected for the positions will be offered an initial contract for 18 months during the first half of which they will engage in training through research group rotations. Upon a successful review and matching to a research group after the rotational period, the initial contract will be extended up to a four-year period.

FIMM is part of the Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine, composed of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and the centers for molecular medicine in Norway, Sweden and Denmark and the EU-LIFE Community. At the national level, FIMM was founded in 2007 as a joint research institute of the University of Helsinki (primary host), the Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa, the National Institute for Health and Welfare, and VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. In the beginning of 2017 FIMM joined the University of Helsinki’s new life science research center, Helsinki Institute of Life Science HiLIFE, as an operational unit.
