Research Associate Position (Full-time 80-100%) in Surveying and GIS-based modelling of pedestrian traffic
As part of the multi-disciplinary project “Pedestrian Comfort in High Pedestrian Activity Areas” the Engaging Mobility group of the Future Cities Laboratory (FCL) at the Singapore ETH Centre (SEC) will develop and calibrate a mesoscopic, district-level pedestrian demand model and implement a related GIS-tool. The model structure will combine advanced Space Syntax measures tailored to the specific urban form typologies prevailing in Singapore and will be calibrated with newly surveyed pedestrian count information. In this context the FCL offers a:
Research Associate Position (Full-time 80-100%) in Surveying and GIS-based modelling of pedestrian traffic
Together with an experienced PostDoc researcher, you will plan, prepare and conduct a new pedestrian count survey at four sites. In collaboration with our technology partner, you will be responsible for the scheduling, installation and deployment of the latest pedestrian counting sensors to collect new original data for the downstream modelling process. In addition, you will draw 2.5D pedestrian network maps for four study sites and collect sidewalk attributes for these four sites in the field using mobile GIS solutions. Furthermore, you will participate in workshops lead by Prof. Dr. Ruth Dalton – a renowned Space Syntax expert – to jointly expand current methodologies to measure network topology with the notion of vertical elements. In this context, you will work with various spatial analysis tools such as DepthmapX, the Urban Network Analysis Toolbox and FCL’s Pedestrian Accessibility Tool. In addition, you will inspire and test new software that will be developed as part of this project. The intended starting date is the 2nd quarter of 2017, the position is for one year and can be extended depending on funding. You will be supervised by Dr. Alex Erath and Michael van Eggermond and collaborate with Prof. Dr. Ruth Dalton (Northumbria University) and Prof. Dr. Christoph Hoelscher (ETH Zurich).
As a research and data-oriented urban planner / designer or transport planner with interest in active modes of transport you ideally already have some experience in preparing and conducting field surveys. In addition, you are experienced in using GIS-Software (ArcGIs, QGis) and ideally already explored either Space Syntax, Urban Network Analysis Toolbox or other software tools to compute network topology measures. You have a degree (BSc or MSc) in urban planning, geography, transport planning or a related discipline and already gained some practical working experience. You are passionate about active mobility and keen to work in an interdisciplinary team at one of the leading urban science research institutions. We offer a full-time position as a Research Associate in the Engaging Mobility group at the Future Cities Laboratory of the Singapore ETH Centre with a competitive salary.
